About
Jake Miller is a guitarist, composer, and bandleader based in the Philadelphia area, recognized for his versatility, deep musicality, and active presence in the region’s vibrant jazz and creative music scenes. A graduate of Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance (B.M. Jazz Performance, 2025), Jake has established himself as a sought-after performer across styles ranging from jazz and fusion to rock, funk, and soul.
Jake began playing guitar at the age of six and developed his musical foundation through performing arts programs in Emmaus and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Early on, he gained experience performing in ensembles at UBACE (Upper Bucks Alliance for Creative Expression), where he played regularly until graduation. During this time, he also served as the lead guitarist for the rock band The Off Switch and the metal band Pandemic, performing at major regional venues including World Café Live, The Queen, The Bitter End, and The Voltage Lounge.
While in high school, Jake transitioned his focus toward jazz, studying under guitarist Mike Lorenz. This led him to pursue formal studies at Temple University, where he refined his craft under the mentorship of esteemed musicians including Vicente Archer, Tim Brey, Dick Oatts, Dan Monaghan, and Mike Boone. Outside of Temple, he has also studied privately with acclaimed guitarist Peter Bernstein, further deepening his understanding of the jazz tradition and modern improvisation.
As a performer, Jake leads his own groups and co-leads BPM (Berkey, Pace, Miller) and The Organization—projects that showcase his range as both an improviser and collaborator. With these ensembles, he has appeared at many of Philadelphia’s premier venues and music spaces, including Chris’ Jazz Café, Bob & Barbara’s, Silk City, the Ukrainian League, and 118 North. His groups are known for their dynamic interplay, inventive arrangements, and commitment to blending tradition with modern expression.
Beyond his own projects, Jake has been an in-demand sideman for a number of respected Philadelphia musicians and ensembles, performing with groups such as the Gabriel Meyer Creative Orchestra, the Jackie Johnson Quartet, Judd Nielson, and Josh Klamka. He has appeared at Solar Myth with Gabriel Meyer and has performed with the Temple University Jazz Band at Dizzy’s Club in New York City alongside trumpeter Nicholas Payton. With the same ensemble, he also toured Japan, performing with renowned saxophonist Donald Harrison and trumpeter Terell Stafford.
Jake’s work reflects a genuine commitment to creativity, collaboration, and musical growth. His playing is marked by a strong rhythmic drive, warm tone, and an expressive approach to melody and harmony. Whether leading his own projects or supporting other artists, he brings a thoughtful sense of musicianship and an openness that makes him a valued part of any ensemble. His influences draw from modern and traditional jazz as well as the deep grooves of soul, funk, and R&B.
In addition to his active performing career, Jake continues to share his passion for music through teaching and mentorship. Drawing from a wide range of professional experiences and formal study, he offers insight into the practical and creative aspects of being a modern guitarist and working musician.
